What is caliche, and what happens if you hit it?
Caliche is a natural hardpan common across the Tucson basin — soil cemented by calcium carbonate into a layer that can behave like weak concrete. When we hit it we change methods, not just push harder: ripping for weakly cemented layers, hydraulic breakers for thick ledges, and a rock saw where a clean, narrow trench matters. Who calls Arizona 811, and how long does it take?
As the excavator, we file the Arizona 811 Blue Stake ticket — state law requires it at least two full working days before digging, and member utilities then mark their lines through the work area. We build those two working days into the schedule so locates never hold up mobilization.
Does Blue Stake mark private underground lines?
No. Arizona 811 locates stop at the meter or point of service. Site lighting circuits, feeders between buildings, irrigation mains, and gas piping on the owner's side are not marked, and record drawings are wrong more often than they are right. We arrange private-utility locating and pothole to verify before the bucket gets near anything critical.
How deep does an electrical trench need to be?
It depends on the wiring method and what sits above it. NEC Table 300.5 sets minimum cover — commonly 24 inches for direct-buried cable and 18 inches for buried PVC conduit, with different figures under buildings, roads, and slabs — and utility-owned runs follow the serving utility's own standards, which typically require more. We trench to what the governing code and utility spec require, not a one-size default.
When does OSHA require trench protection?
At 5 feet deep, OSHA's excavation standard — 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P — requires a protective system: sloping, benching, shoring, or a trench shield, unless the excavation is entirely in stable rock. A competent person classifies the soil, selects the system, and inspects the trench daily and after every storm. We staff that role on our own crews.
