What It Involves

Three questions decide the job

Every home EV charger install comes down to the same three questions: how much current the charger will draw, whether your electrical service has that current to spare, and how far the panel is from where the car parks. A 48-amp Wall Connector needs a 60-amp circuit; a 32-amp charger needs 40. That is a large new load on a house, and the National Electrical Code (Article 625) treats it as continuous — the circuit is sized at 125 percent of the charger’s draw.

Whether your service can carry it is a calculation, not a guess. NEC 220.87 lets us size an existing home’s load from its actual demand history rather than a worst-case estimate, and most 200-amp Tucson homes have room. Many 100-amp homes do not — and for those, a load-managed charger is often a far cheaper answer than a service upgrade.

Panel across the house

Tucson homes often have the panel on the side wall opposite the garage. The run through the attic or along the exterior is the biggest cost driver — distance, not the charger, sets the price.

100-amp service, full panel

A charger with load management (or one set to a lower current) can live on a 100-amp service that would fail the calculation at 48 amps. We would rather sell you that than a service upgrade you do not need.

Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel

We will not add a 60-amp circuit to a panel with a documented failure history. Replacing it is the right first step, and it is a normal panel change.

Two EVs, or a second charger later

Two chargers can share one circuit with power sharing, or the service can be sized for both now. Tell us what the driveway will look like in two years and we will wire for it once.

Tesla’s installer program is a credential; the ROC electrical licence is the thing that lets us pull the permit and stand behind the work. We hold both. That matters because a home charger is one of the few residential electrical jobs where a mistake shows up as heat — an undersized conductor or a loose termination on a 48-amp continuous load is a fire risk, not an inconvenience.

The work is done by our own electricians, permitted with your jurisdiction, and inspected. The inspection record follows the house, which is exactly what a buyer’s inspector will want to see when you sell.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at a Tucson home?

It depends mostly on the distance from your panel to the parking spot and whether your service has the capacity. A short run from a 200-amp panel in the garage is the simple case; a long attic run or a panel change is the expensive one. Can my 100-amp service handle a Level 2 charger?

Sometimes. It depends on the calculated load of the rest of the house, which NEC 220.87 lets us take from your actual usage. A charger with load management, or one set to a lower current, often fits where a full 48-amp charger will not. If the calculation says no, a service upgrade is the honest answer, and we will show you the numbers.

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger?

Yes. A new 240-volt branch circuit is permitted and inspected work in the City of Tucson, Pima County, Marana, Oro Valley and Sahuarita. We pull the permit as part of the job.

Should I hardwire the charger or use a plug?

For a 48-amp charger, hardwiring is the only option — a plug-in charger is limited to 40 amps. For 32- to 40-amp chargers either works. A hardwired unit is cleaner and needs no GFCI breaker; a receptacle lets you take the charger with you when you move but now requires GFCI protection in a garage under the current code.

Yes. Outdoor installs use a weather-rated charger and enclosure, and the run is often underground in conduit. Tucson sun is hard on equipment, so placement in shade where possible is part of the design.
