What It Involves

Three kinds of old wiring, three different answers

“Rewire” covers very different jobs. Aluminum branch-circuit wiring, installed in many Tucson homes built roughly 1965 to 1973, has a documented history of overheating at connections; the fix can be a listed connector at every termination or a full copper replacement. Ungrounded two-wire circuits in pre-1960s homes are not a fire hazard in themselves, but they leave three-prong receptacles with no ground and no place for a surge protector to dump. Cloth-insulated cable from the same era becomes brittle and is the most common reason a full rewire is genuinely needed.

A full rewire on a slab-on-grade Tucson home is invasive work — attic runs, wall openings, patching. We do it, and we do it under a permit with rough-in and final inspections. Do You Actually Need One

When a rewire is warranted — and when it is not

A full rewire is the most disruptive residential electrical job there is. These are the situations that justify it, and the ones that usually do not.

The insurer or the inspector said so

A four-point inspection or an insurer’s letter often names aluminum wiring or an FPE panel. Those are specific, fixable problems. Ask for the report; the fix is usually narrower than “rewire the house”.

Warm outlets, flickering, burnt smell

In an aluminum-wired home these are the classic signs of a failing connection and they are urgent. Remediation at every termination is the answer; it is a day or two of work, not a gutted house.

Brittle insulation everywhere

When cloth-insulated cable crumbles at every box, the circuits are past their life and a full rewire is the honest recommendation. We will show you what we found, not just tell you.

You just want three-prong outlets

You may not need a rewire. GFCI protection on an ungrounded circuit is a code-recognised fix, properly labelled. A rewire for grounded outlets alone is usually money that could go into the panel instead.

How We Work

Scope from evidence, then permit, then rewire

We start by opening a sample of boxes and looking at the panel — the conductors, the terminations, the breaker type — and we write down what we found. That becomes the scope: aluminum remediation, targeted circuit replacement, or a whole-house rewire with a new panel. You get a description of the problem that another electrician could read and check.

The work is permitted and inspected at rough-in and at final. On a slab-on-grade house that means attic runs and controlled wall openings, patched and ready for paint. A rewire is also the natural time for a panel or service upgrade, since every circuit is being landed anyway.

My home has aluminum wiring. Does the whole house need rewiring?

Usually not. Aluminum branch-circuit wiring fails at the connections, not along the cable, and the accepted fix is a listed aluminum-to-copper connector at every termination — each receptacle, switch, fixture and splice — done under a permit. A full copper rewire is the more expensive, more permanent option. We explain both and let you choose.

How much does it cost to rewire a house in Tucson?

A whole-house rewire is priced from the house: the number of circuits, the construction (attic access, slab, block walls), and whether the panel changes with it. We quote it from a site visit with written findings. The panel and service side can be priced now with the cost calculator.

Do I need a permit to rewire my house?

Yes. Rewiring is permitted, inspected work in every Tucson-area jurisdiction, with a rough-in inspection before the walls are closed and a final. Unpermitted rewiring is one of the things a buyer’s inspector looks for, and it is far harder to fix after the drywall is back up.

Can you just add grounded outlets?

Sometimes without rewiring. The code allows a GFCI-protected receptacle on an ungrounded circuit, labelled “No Equipment Ground”, and for many rooms that is the practical answer. Where you genuinely need a ground — a surge protector, certain appliances — a new grounded circuit is run for that location.

Will you have to open all my walls?

On a slab-on-grade Tucson house most circuits route through the attic and down the walls, so openings are at device locations and where a run has to turn. We plan the routing to minimise them and patch what we open. It is disruptive; it is not a gut.

Should I replace the panel at the same time?
