These link straight to TEP’s own pages and current publications. Individual standard sheets (SR-405 metering, SR-414 CT metering, SR-600 grounding, and the rest) live inside the 2026 ESR Book. Note: TEP publishes the book annually (around March) and keeps revising afterward — check the Monthly Summary of Revisions on the ESR portal for changes made after the book published. If something looks off, confirm directly with TEP service planning.

Requirements we field most

Quick reference based on TEP’s published guidance — confirm the current edition with TEP before you build to it.

Metering

  • TEP supplies the meter — the meter socket / panel is the customer’s or contractor’s responsibility, and it must be on TEP’s approved list (SR-452 above).
  • Meter height — center of the meter generally 3′6″ min to 6′3″ max above final grade.
  • Multiple meters — each panel permanently marked (not painted), typically 1/4″ min letters on a non-ferrous tag riveted to the panel.

CT / commercial metering

  • Larger commercial services beyond self-contained meter ratings use instrument-transformer (CT) metering — socket requirements are in sheet SR-414 and CT cabinet installation, conduit, and clearance details in sheet SR-422, both inside the 2026 ESR Book above.
  • CT cabinet conduit — TEP’s guidance commonly requires service conduit from the CT cabinet to be IMC or RMC to a minimum of 18″ below final grade. Confirm in the current sheet.

Underground service & trenching

  • Who does what — the customer/contractor typically provides the trenching, conduit, backfill, and surface restoration; TEP furnishes, installs, owns, and maintains the underground service cable to the approved termination (Rules 906).
  • Before you dig — call Arizona 811 (Blue Stake) for utility locates. We self-perform this trenching and conduit work daily with our own crews and equipment.

Grounding & inspection

  • Grounding electrode conductor by service size#6 solid copper for 100–125 A services; #4 AWG copper for 150–200 A services (per NEC Table 250.66, which TEP’s grounding sheet SR-600 defers to, as enforced locally). SR-600 also requires a GEC run without conduit to be at least #4 copper, and any GEC smaller than #4 to be solid copper.
  • Ground rods — two 8′ × 5/8″ rods are the local norm; SR-600 requires rods at least 6′ apart with at least 8′ in contact with the soil. Confirm against the 2026 ESR Book and the NEC.
  • Inspection commonly checks — meter sockets, connections, trenches, conduit, and address / panel labeling.

Working in Trico territory? TEP doesn’t serve the whole metro — Trico Electric Cooperative serves areas including much of Marana, Corona de Tucson, and other outlying areas, and has its own service requirements. Confirm which utility serves your site before building to a standard.

Approved Equipment

TEP approved panels & meter equipment

TEP publishes its approved metering service equipment in standard sheet SR-452 — the authoritative list of meter sockets and metering equipment accepted for purchase or stock, covering 0–200 A and 201–400 A single- and three-phase services. TEP republishes it quarterly (January, April, July, October), so always use the posted sheet, not a cached copy.

The Process

Getting a new commercial TEP service — the typical flow

Every project differs and TEP’s process governs, but a new or upgraded commercial service usually moves through these steps. Build the lead time into your schedule — utility design and equipment are often the long poles. For the step-by-step version in plain language, see our TEP new service requirements guide.

1 · Apply

Construction application

Submit TEP’s construction application with site plan and load information. Earlier is better — this starts TEP’s design clock.

2 · Design

TEP design & point of connection

TEP service planning designs the service, sets the point of connection and transformer location, and identifies any easements required.

3 · Build

Trench, conduit & equipment

The contractor installs the trench, conduit, pads, and metering equipment to TEP’s spec — using gear from the approved list (SR-452). Call Arizona 811 before digging.

4 · Inspect

Inspections & corrections

The AHJ and TEP check the installation — sockets, connections, trench and conduit, labeling. Corrections here are the most common schedule slip.

5 · Energize

Meter set & release

TEP pulls in or terminates its service cable, sets the meter, and releases the service — the site goes live.
