Historic Fourth Avenue Digital Wayfinding Kiosks

Interactive touchscreen kiosks along Historic Fourth Avenue that give visitors directions, business listings, event information and transit times. We carried the whole job: the underground, the foundations, the power, and setting and energizing the kiosks themselves.

Scope of Work

A streetscape job where the hard part is everything under the sidewalk

The kiosks are what people see. What made the project work is the part nobody sees — a power path cut into a live commercial street, foundations set to the kiosk manufacturer's anchor pattern within a fraction of an inch, and sidewalk put back so the avenue reads as finished the morning after each pour.

Traffic control & site protection

Lane and parking closures — staged so businesses kept their frontage and customers kept their access
Pedestrian routing — barricade and fence lines that held a compliant path of travel past every open excavation
Daily reset — plating, backfill and cleanup at the end of each shift — nothing left open overnight

Underground & civil

Saw-cutting and trenching — through asphalt roadway, concrete sidewalk and landscape to reach each kiosk location
Conduit and pull boxes — duct run with pull points sized for the cable pulls and future service access
Restoration — asphalt patching and full sidewalk panel replacement, matched to the existing streetscape

Concrete foundations

Reinforced pads — rebar cages tied and inspected, formed flush into the walking surface
Anchor-bolt templates — set to the kiosk manufacturer's pattern so the cabinets landed plumb the first time
Handholes cast in — traffic-rated pull boxes set at finish grade inside the pour

Power, setting & commissioning

Service and feeders — power pulled to each location and terminated
Grounding and bonding — ground rod and bonding to the cabinet at every pad
Set and energize — cabinets set on the anchors, terminated, energized and turned over live

Sequence

How it went in

Every location repeated the same sequence. Doing it in this order is what kept the avenue open and the pours right.

Step 1

Open the path

Traffic control first, then saw-cut and trench from the power source to the kiosk location — through the roadway, along the curb line and across the sidewalk. Conduit and pull boxes went in as the trench advanced so nothing sat open longer than a shift.

Step 2

Build the base

Rebar cage tied in the excavation with the conduit stub and ground brought up through it, then the anchor-bolt template set and squared to the sidewalk. The template is the whole job — if the bolt pattern is off, the cabinet does not go on.

Step 3

Pour and put it back

Pad and sidewalk poured in one operation so there is no seam where the old walk meets the new, with the handhole cast in at finish grade. Asphalt patched back in the roadway over the trench line.

Step 4

Set and energize

Cabinet set on the anchors, feeders and ground terminated, kiosk energized and the display brought up live — wayfinding, business listings, transit information and event content.

Why It Worked

One contractor from the trench to the touchscreen

Streetscape work in an occupied district usually gets split — a civil sub, a concrete sub, an electrical sub, and a general contractor trying to sequence all three around business hours. We hold all of it, so the trench, the pour and the terminations are scheduled by the same people who have to answer for the finish.
